Gordon Shields

Gordon Shields
Chairman & Founder - Shields Environmental plc


Gordon Shields founded Shields Environmental in 1979 and quickly adopted the challenge of making environmental excellence a part of every day business. Since the early 1980's the Company has been dealing effectively with clients' environmental issues. With Gordon's drive for environmental excellence, the Company became one of the first in the world to have a formal Environmental Management System, report publicly on its environmental impact, and measure and reduce its CO2 emissions.

Gordon has since received continual recognition for over 25 years for developing a company that is at the cutting edge of environmental management and other aspects of Corporate Responsibility.

Gordon sits on the Leadership Board of Business in the Community's (BITC) Environment Division a position he has held since 1998. BITC is a unique movement of over 700 companies whose purpose is to inspire, challenge, engage and support business in continually improving its positive impact on society. BITC's President is HRH Prince Charles. Gordon was invited by the UK's Environment Minister to serve on a steering group that assists the UK government in meeting its recycling and landfill diversion targets. More recently, Gordon became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA) for his contribution to the Environment. The RSA was founded in 1754 and is an independent, non-aligned, multi-disciplinary charity that encourages sustainable economic development and the release of human potential through a programme of projects.

As a subject matter expert on all aspects of environmental management, Gordon has taken part numerous educational and media activities providing valued commentary on the importance of sustainable development. He has participated in a BBC/Open University/Business in the Environment documentary, appeared on the Discovery Channel and various other TV and radio programmes.

He has also contributed to the efforts of the United Nations Environmental Programme and hosted visits by them, many government authorities and trade missions. Gordon also speaks extensively on the subject of Environmental Management at the request of major organisations and universities. Click on the links below for more information:

Cooking, golfing, gardening, reading, travelling and extreme skiing are some of his hobbies. Recently, Gordon completed the Haute Route, a trek from Chamonix in France to Zermatt in Switzerland across the Alps on skis.
