COP 27: How you network can help the 1.5°C target

The UN Conference of the Parties summit (COP27) is a key collaboration event for world leaders to come together with activists and climate organisations to support the future of our planet. If you’re a telecoms operator you can help, by implementing a sustainable supply chain, read on to find out more about our one-stop-solution.

In November 2022, Egypt hosted the 27th UN Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh. This latest summit emphasised the need for immediate bold action in addressing the climate crisis and focused on working collectively if the existing climate change targets are to be upheld.

During the conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, highlighted that more significant efforts are needed to limit global warming to 1.5°C. “The science is clear,” he said. “Any hope of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C means achieving global net zero emissions by 2050. But that 1.5°C goal is on life support – and the machines are rattling. We are getting dangerously close to the point of no return.”

At Shields, we passionately believe that the development of a circular economy has a central role to play in tackling climate change and managing global warming. As well as reducing waste and limiting the depletion of finite resources, a circular economy can lower greenhouse emissions by reducing the reliance on CO2-intensive manufacturing and production processes.

Shields has been helping telecommunication network providers minimise their environmental impact for over 40 years. Our revolutionary MarketPlace platform has been meticulously designed to enable operators to join the circular economy and to invest in repairing, recycling and reusing equipment. Rather than purchasing newly manufactured items, MarketPlace provides telecom clients with a global view of the existing assets available on the market so that procurement teams can select products that have been refurbished, repaired or de-installed for updated equipment (5G).

Thanks to our stringent testing here at Shields, the equipment we provide is one of the most reliable options available to the market. With a failure rate of only 0.5% compared to the original equipment manufacturers’ average failure rate of an 4% average. We trust that not only will our circular economy MarketPlace solution help save the planet and reduce resource depletion, but it will also save you the logistical nightmares of returning merchandise authorization (RMAs), all whilst generating CAPEX savings and new opportunities for revenue streams.

This procurement strategy can reduce the carbon emissions associated with telecom network operators’ value chains by up to 89%, as it cuts the need for resource extraction, manufacturing and overseas shipping. This substantial reduction could help the telecommunications industry to lead the way in supporting the 1.5°C targets. By taking decisive action and investing in the circular economy, network operators can help the sector develop more sustainable working practices that support the goals of COP27 and are aligned with the needs of the environment.
